Hey Fever! 2018
Mark your calendars for Hey Fever!, Ottawa's Contra Dance weekend, on November 2nd to 4th, 2018. Our weekend is fun, friendly, and welcoming to all. While we love dancing zesty contras, we also appreciate different formation dances, outstanding live music, and socializing with dancer friends from near and far. We have two fantastic bands and two excellent callers lined up for the weekend. There'll be a Dress Up (fun or fancy) contra dance on the Saturday night, including a costume parade.
Come enjoy this awesome and very popular dance weekend! The schedule will be available soon. Registration opens in May 2018.
In addition to all the great contra dancing, we plan some workshops and some fun themed dance sessions (waltzes, English country, ...). Plus, for our convenience, the clocks go back on Saturday night!
The bands are ...
Featuring Pascal Gemme, Nicholas Williams and Yann Falquet.
Firmly rooted in the soil of their native land, the energetic and original traditional 'power trio' also incorporates the dynamism of today's North American and European folk cultures in their music. They weave precise and intricate fiddle, flute and accordion work, gorgeous vocal harmonies, energetic foot percussion and guitar accompaniment into a big and jubilant musical feast. Their distinctive sound, sense of humour and stage presence makes them a supreme crowd pleaser.
Genticorum is also a beautiful Contra dance band. We have had the luxury of enjoying them greatly in Ottawa. Check out this video of them playing in our Ottawa hall!
Featuring Eileen Nicholson, Rachel Bell, and Andrew VanNorstrand.
Seaglass is a wonderful dance band featuring Rachel Bell on accordion, Eileen Nicholson on fiddle and Andrew VanNorstrand on guitar. They have a unique, wide-ranging repertoire from classic New England contra dance tunes to French balfolk and English Country Dance music, often weaving in roots-rock grooves and captivating improvisations. Seaglass has been received with great enthusiasm by dance and music communities ranging from the northeast all the way to California and even in Paris, France!
The callers are ...
Lisa Greenleaf has been treating dancers across north America and beyond to her high spirited, witty calling for many years, and is known for precise walk-throughs of zesty and flowing dances. Whether she is presenting contemporary or traditional contras, fun squares, or challenging dances of all shapes and sizes, Lisa engages the crowd with her humor and community spirit.
Dugan Murphy's voice is smooth like an evening radio personality and his pants are loud like his favorite metal band. He calls contra dances across the U.S. and Canada, but mostly in the Northeast and Midwest. He is known for emanating joy and for teaching with the artful precision of clockwork.
